Description:

Civil War Era Smith & Wesson Model 2 Revolver
Believed to be a model 2 Smith & Wesson with a 5" barrel, 6 shot cylinder and patent dates listed on the bullet chamber but somewhat indistinct. This model appears to be a .32 ca. which was widely purchased by the federal government as a step up from the .22 ca. Model 1. On the butt of the gun, the serial number of 5408 is stamped. According to Charles Pate in his article for the "Bullet 'N Press" the 7th Kentucky unit was the only unit officially issued a Number 2 as the State ordered 2600 Number 2's from a Cincinnati dealer B. Kittredge and Co. for $13.75 each. All of these revolvers were almost certainly under the 10,000 mark in serial number. All of the Kentucky #2 revolvers are thought to have been issued to the 7th Kentucky Calvary and they were mustered into federal service on August 16, 1862 in Paris, Ky. which is the town where the consignor's family lived. This is a tip up revolver which means there is a hinge that allows the barrel to tip up, the cylinder to come out and load the gun with the bullets. Spent shells are ejected using the rammer pin located under the barrel. The gun is not restored and sold as is. Please take a look at it at one of the previews to assess what it would take to bring it back to perfect.
