Description:

Rare Ivory Calling Card Case
A truly exceptional and highly sought-after Chinese carved ivory calling card case dating back to the late 1700s or early 1800s. This exquisite piece showcases intricate and detailed carvings depicting various scenes, possibly representing daily life or cultural traditions. This piece has been described to us as "museum quality".
Calling card cases were essential social accessories during the 18th and 19th centuries. They were used to convey visits, invitations, and messages between individuals. When someone wished to visit a friend or acquaintance, they would leave their calling card at the door. The card served as a notification of their visit and a way to express their intentions.
During our research, we found a similar item in the National Museum of American History.

It measures 4 1/4" by 2 3/4" and 5/16 of an inch deep.
