Description:

This early drop leaf walnut table with turned legs is circa 1820. It measures 47 3/8” wide by 24” deep by 29” tall. It has a 5th leg that swings out to support the largest back leaf creating a 44” by 47 3/8” overall table top surface. A noted Lexington Kentucky artist (name misplaced, unfortunately, by the consignor) painted the table with a classic scene of boys fishing in a pond out front of a Federal Era home complete with trees, canoes, fishing poles, large fish, etc. etc. The large drop leaf features another bucolic farm scene and the smaller front leaf (which is stationary) is adorned with a large three dimensional hand carved fish. Note: The consignor recalls that the artist was featured in a large article about him in the Lexington Herald Leader back in the 1990’s which included pictures of some of his creations. By that association, it may be that the archives of the newspaper could be searched to determine the artist's name. In any case, it looks and feels 19th Century all the way, displays beautifully, and is definitely a one-of-a-kind for the serious folk art collector, antiquarian, and/or fishing aficionado. Did I hear Man Cave?
