Description:

Cherry sugar chest with faux paneled doors - possibly Warren County, Kentucky
Sugar chest with three burl cherry faux doors. Poplar secondary wood. Well formed reeded legs. Triple compartment interior with a graceful scallop to top edge of the two partitions. Neither interior nor the back has been annoyed with a finish added at a later date. Excellent condition with an attractive old polished finish. A chest with similar sensibilities is illustrated in the Nov. 1947 Kentucky issue of the Magazine Antiques on page 363. That chest shares the burl cherry paneled faux doors, very similar reeded leg, and a lift lid that hinges from a fixed board top. Another common trait is both chests share the feature of the back legs not fully melon reeded on rear exposure. Unlike the front legs the rear legs spare the labor of a 360 degree reeded treatment. They are reeded perhaps 300 degrees leaving the leg smooth where that element cannot be seen when the chest is against a wall Good possibility both share a common shop origin as cherry burled panels, creating an allusion as doors, is an occurrence seldom encountered. I have the pleasure of often visiting that chest pictured in the magazine. Those visits reinforce the notion of a common origin. 30"height 31"width
17 1/2" deep. Circa 1820 Kentucky origin with a good possibility from Warren County. Breaking News: As of 3/16/2024, we have found a penciled date on the underside of the hinged lift lid 1823. See support image at the end.
