Description:

Kentucky 13" x 9" Sampler by Lucinda Ellis born 1803 and finished in 1816. Ms. Ellis attended school in Maysville, Ky. leaving the Academy at age 12 joining her father at their Campbell County Ky. farm. This important sampler is an instructive template for needleworkers. Actually a teaching instrument. The alphabet is repeated five times in horizontal belts of lettering. Each instance in a different stitch design. The numerals only once depicted. A belt of strawberries on a vine suggests a border design to be used which is often found on some of the better early Kentucky samplers. The lower belt of design is a proposal for other needlework designs beyond the sampler exercise. Ms. Ellis, knew her calling as an instructor at age 12. When 98 (in Sept. 1901) Ms. Ellis (now Lucinda Ellis Dunlap) was recognized for a maternal achievement in the American Monthly Magazine a publication for the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where in this sampler was discussed. Thanks to Andrew Richmond for his research to the origin of this sampler. Excellent condition with no evidence of sun fade. Maysville or/and Campbell Co. origin. Circa 1816.
