Description:

Inlaid cherry sideboard - Central Kentucky Origin
This board has a history of descent through a Louisville, Kentucky family. Origin more likely in the Lexington-Frankfort vicinity. Good cherry veneers and finely drawn oval inlaid bandings elevate this to the better surviving sideboards from the early period in Kentucky. It could use work to be looking as it did when made. The important part is we know what is missing so there is no guess work as to how restoration might follow. The shallow aprons across the front are all an early addition as is the gallery on the top. Likely made without a gallery as no evidence shows upon removing the gallery to suggest it had another. The gallery was likely a stylistic update a generation after made and a coin toss whether to stay or go. It looks fine though a later element that confuses dating. The aprons also added early replacing the inlaid banding seen on the leg fronts at the lower edge of the case. This inlay swept the front and up the corbels when made. All frontal veneer is intact which is fortunate as that a difficult match for old burl cherry. There is a nagging shallow patch to proper right front leg at hinge site that could use painting over to match the post color. That coloring and the banding re-introduction to the front should have the board looking as it did. This board recorded and photographed by Mack Cox for inclusion to The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts database indexed to Kentucky furniture. Central Kentucky origin, circa 1815. 39 3/8" x 22 1/4" x 74 1/2" Height to top of gallery 48 1/4"
