Description:

Exceptional 82" x 75" Krazy Quilt dated May 1 1908. The decorated pieced polygons include a newspaper boy delivering The Ky Post; Two multi-stitched baskets of Flowers; a guitar; a teddy bear holding the American flag; three butterfly panels; four fans placed in the quadrants; and several floral species. Truponto panels include a woolly dog, a mouse, a pig feeding from a basket, a monkey feeding on fruit, Uncle Sam holding an American flag, two chicks pecking feed, a stork, strawberries on a vine, a cluster of grapes, and a plum. This quilt has three panels which a good researcher may find an aid to determining the origin and possibly the quilter. One being the newsboy for The Kentucky Post. Another, a 3rd place ribbon for the Cincinnati Times- Star Quilt Show is pinned to the quilt. Being a newspaper sponsored exhibition must surely indicate quilters names were reported for those who won awards. The other is a gold medal silk ribbon awarded to The Stewart Iron Works from Cincinnati at the 1904 St.Louis World's Fair. That ribbon almost certainly in the possesion of the proprietors of that iron works. Lastly is a gold medal silk ribbon awarded to The Stewart Iron Works from Cincinnati at the 1904 St.Louis World's Fair. That ribbon almost certainly in the possesion of the proprietors of that iron works four years after presentation. The ribbon the only rectangular panel on the quilt. There are five panels which have no adornment which are completely shot out. Two pair being the same fabric lot. There are perhaps 20 or more other panels with vertical splits to the silk, though no blow out. None of the aforementioned have an added design element. A single designed panel with damage. That the truponto Uncle Sam whose chest has an isolated explosion to reveal a puff of cotton. Sam's appendages and neck unaffected by this burst. Colors all brilliant in a likely barely used unlaundered state. Velvet, cotton, silk, and wool handstitched top with machine quilting. Probably Cincinnati or Northern Ky. origin, 1908.
