Description:

Monumental repousse coin silver chalice by Daniel Winchester while working for William & Archibald Cooper - Louisville, Kentucky
Huge repousse coin silver chalice marked "W&A COOPER ' of Louisville, Kentucky. Also struck by the silversmith "PURE COIN". A later jeweler struck a sterling mark to assure future gazers that this was not to be confused as plated. Pristine as made condition. Period vertically sited monogram. "GJB" is discreetly inscribed in a compact space near the rim. This being one of very few pieces of Kentucky silver known to have 360 degree repousse embellishment filling the field. An exception being Monteith bowls by G.W. Stewart and Garner & Winchester while working at Lexington. Daniel Winchester may well have had his hand in those bowls. 11" tall, 6" diameter at mouth, 5 ¾" at foot. Weighs 26 1/2 troy ounces. Louisville, Kentucky origin.
Note: Daniel Winchester is recorded in the 1841 Louisville City Directory as working for the Cooper brothers. Daniel F. Winchester born in 1818 at Baltimore. He had recently apprenticed and worked for Samuel Kirk as a journeyman at Baltimore. Kirk was among the earliest silversmiths in American to reintroduce the technique of repousse which Winchester liberally executed on this oversize chalice. Probably made as a show piece in the sales room for William & Archibald Cooper. Winchester's stay in Louisville was brief, less than two years, before locating to Lexington, Kentucky where he soon formed a partnership with Eli Garner (GARNER & WINCHESTER), in 1842 or early 1843. Once leaving the Coopers, this impractical chalice was possibly sold as it no longer exhibited the skill available through the firm so to display their range of expression. Lexington's gentry proved to have quite an appetite as many pieces of repoussed hollowware survive bearing the mark of Garner & Winchester up to 1861. Daniel Winchester, while working in Louisville, can be safely considered the maker of this extraordinary vessel predating any of the Lexington forms.
