Description:

Oil on canvas, Kentucky landscape, in the Hudson River School tradition - Harrison or Bourbon County, Kentucky
Oil on canvas landscape probably painted in the vicinity of Harrison-Bourbon Counties, Kentucky. Firmly grounded in the Hudson River Valley school though executed in Kentucky. This example from the Eugenia Lair Moss Estate where it descended in Harrison County Kentucky. I have seen numerous examples of this artist's work among families of the area. Studio work with artistic liberties allowed to the landscapes, likely often from imaginary views. This one with a laid limestone fence which grounds it more to our area. Some of this artist's works are tropical compositions with palm trees. Some appear to be set in the Alps. All when found with the original frames tend to date to the 1850's. Frames are usually cove molded gold leaf which were costly in the day. There are enough surviving to believe the artist was professional. This, the most complex composition encountered. Person on a hay wagon; woman feeding chickens; a man drawing water at a well; a couple at leisure on a riverbank; two others launching or mooring a boat; a community with houses and church; and cattle watering on a river bank. Recently cleaned, in excellent original condition. The original frame with a single ash leaf (?), stenciled on the cove to either side. Copy of sale bill where purchased will accompany this painting. 24" x 36". Framed, 31 ½" x 43 ½". Circa 1850's, Bourbon-Harrison County area origin. See lot 138 for another example of this artist's work from the same estate."
