Description:

Portrait, oil on canvas of a Lieutenant Colonel of infantry wearing the 1833 Officers Dress Coat. The silver bullion and white metal buttons are the tell for the branch until the 1851 uniform regulation which mandated that all buttons be brass, regardless of branch. Thanks to Mike Foncannon for information in the last two paragraphs. Purchased this portrait circa 1980 from an estate in Danville, Ky. and repurchased this year. Housed in the original molded gold leaf frame which probably dates within the second quarter of the 19th century. The portrait does not appear to have been cleaned or had any later work. Very good condition with a thumb print sized depression to canvas and a tiny hole. Otherwise excellent. Possibly KY. origin, certainly American, circa 1840. Measures 30" by 24" image size and 39 3/4" by 33 1/4" in frame.

From what I can tell from what is shown in the painting, the painting is of a Lieutenant Colonel of Infantry wearing the 1833 Officers Dress Coat. The silver bullion and white metal buttons are the tell for the branch until the 1851 Uniform regulation which mandated that all buttons be brass, regardless of branch. The distinctive trim seen on his left cuff was unique to the 1833 officer's uniform. The rank is indicated by the 1/2 inch silver fringe on the epaulette, however the crescent at the end of the epaulette should be gold bullion, rather than silver, as shown. Militia? There is also the chance that the artist may have "promoted" him by thickening his fringe. Hair style would be consistent with the Regency period, although his thinning hair may have limited his options. In 1846, Senior officers (Majors and above) were authorized to wear the frock coat that would carry over through the Civil War. This was certainly a more practical uniform for field duty. I have been unable to determine when the M1833 coat was totally done away with. However, with the need for enlargement of the Army and Militia units for the Mexican War, I suspect that the cheaper and easier to produce frock coats probably spelled its demise. So, between 1833-34 and 1846-48 in the Regular Army? Longer in Militia units, especially those in the North East that didn't participate in the War. Mike
