Description:

Continuous arm straight chair 40 1/4" x 23" with 16" seat height made in the state penitentiary at Frankfort, Ky. Likely dating to the third quarter of the 19th century. There were many of these distinctive chairs made with prison labor which made for tough competition among the various chair makers during the 19th century in the Frankfort vicinity. Few were made without rockers. Possibly 5% of the total production of this continuous rockerless armchair were made. Likely inexpensive as many of the rocking chairs are found with numerous layers of paint having found tenure on porches. Probably the original finish with what appears as the original woven cane seat now likely beyond repair. Fortunately for their competition the prison side chairs of the same period were homely compared to the graceful design seen in this example. The Browning family (located in the the adjoining Anderson Co.) was able to compete with many of the Browning family side chairs found through out the region. A Browning armed rocker though is seldom encountered possibly due to an inexpensive handsome alternative made by the state.
