Description:

Circa 1850 maple chair that was useful to the Shakers as the chair could fit underneath the dining table with ease. Our consignor's great great uncle took care of the remaining Shakers at Pleasant Hill and when the last died, he was given all of the furniture that was left at the community. This chair came from that group. They have been in the same family for all of these years. We have three of these chairs in this auction. They are in lots 22 and 52.
This example is in fair to good condition with a piece of wood missing where the upper support meets the backrest. You can see this in the photo provided. The chair has the turned spindle backs and four stretchers and like the others, it was painted white and then stripped. When it was stripped, the name on the underneath of the seat was left on and you can view this in the photo. Cannot make it out but perhaps you can. Measures 15" wide by 18" deep and is 28" in height in the back. Check out the other tall chair in cherry that was used at Pleasant Hill as well. It is in lot 164.
