Description:

Tabulated Pedigree of Jim Wilkes
He was owned by William Threkeld, Morning View, KY. He was foaled in 1883, bred by C.M. Carlisle, Key West, Kenton County KY. This pedigree was tabulated by A.J Meston of Saint Louis Missouri, and he signed the document at the bottom, Jim Wilkes is registered in Wallace's American Trotting register, Volume 7 (1888). His grandfather was the famous George Wilkes. The lineage of all American Trotters and Pacers can be traced to one or more of 4 prominent Hambletonian sons: George Wilkes, Dictator, Happy Medium, and Electioneer. George Wilkes was the son of Hambleton 10 and Dolly Spanker. George Wilkes is a story of cruel treatment. His mother was found dead in a field and her newborn son was taken back to the farm. George wouldn't drink cow's milk until they added rum and sugar. For the rest of his life he would only eat if the food had rum in it. He received rough treatment in his races and was beaten badly. He won 27 of 69 races, earned $20,000 and stopped racing in 1872. After that he was used for breeding. In 1873 he was leased to W. H. Wilson for breeding. Wilson leased Ash Grove farm which later became Idle Hour Farm of Lexington. Simmons, the owner, bought the farm and George Wilkes finally had a permanent home. George Wilkes died May 28, 1882 at 26 years old of pneumonia. Jim Wilkes was not as famous as his father, but his son, Jim Wilkes Jr, became a winner.
