Description:

Very Rare Lowestoft Coffee Mug
This is a rare Lowestoft porcelain coffee mug, featuring a cylindrical shape and a cream-colored body. It is decorated with hand-painted floral swags in pink, blue, and green, along with a brown and gold rim and a blue-ribbon motif near the top. The front of the mug is inscribed "MD a Trifle from Lowestoft 1795," indicating it was likely a souvenir or gift piece made in Lowestoft, England, in the year 1795. There is a long age crack on the back side.
The mug originated from Lowestoft, a town in Suffolk, England, which was home to a porcelain manufactory during the latter part of the 18th century. Lowestoft was one of several English centers producing porcelain at this time, contributing to the broader development of the English ceramics industry. Their output, typically a soft-paste porcelain, often featured distinctive decorative styles.
The inscription "a Trifle from Lowestoft" strongly suggests that this mug served as a keepsake or a small present. In the late 1700s, it was becoming increasingly common for people to acquire such items as reminders of places they had visited or as tokens of affection.
A similar mug is on the British Musem website. See link below. Stands 5" tall.
