Description:

Victorian Silver-Plated Hot Water Urn
The hot water urn was an essential part of the tea service by the latter half of the 18th century. It kept the water warm so that the tea pot could be refilled. The charcoal burning urn made its appearance in the 1760's and rapidly put tea and coffee kettles, which have a burner underneath, out of fashion. The discovery, patented by John Wadham in 1774, that a heated bar of cast iron, inserted in a tube around which the water flowed, acted almost as efficiently as an external charcoal burner and allowed for a more elegant design, meant that the heater could be dispensed with.
24" tall
This silver-plated English Regency twin-handled hot water urn is a fine example of Victorian craftsmanship, featuring ornate engravings and decorative motifs. The urn has a lid with a finial, two gracefully curved handles, and stands on a square base with four small feet. The intricate floral patterns and emblematic designs reflect the refined aesthetic of the Regency period. Used primarily for serving hot water, it was a staple in affluent Victorian households, ensuring a steady supply for tea or other hot beverages while also serving as an elegant display piece.
